Dr Holger Rumpff (1952 - 2000)

Holger first arrived on Christmas Island from Germany in 1979 to study the Island's Robber Crabs (Birgus Latro). He soon became involved in the island life, married his wife Patricia and together with their daugher Tilke, made the island their home.

Over the ensuing years Holger's talents, skills and experience were to become well known and recognised, and he was recruited to the position of Environment Officer with the Australian Nature Conservation Agency (now National Parks), where he quickly became an integral part og the team.

Holger enjoyed sharing his knowledge of Christmas Island with others, and his love of the island's environment and its people is legendary.

He was instrumental in pioneering the raising of community awareness on the island towards the plight of the Red Crabs during migration and played a major role in documenting Christmas Island's natural history and culture.

His photographs have appeared in German Geo, Austrlain Geographic ++++++++

As Holger's photography was all done using manual cameras, digitising his collection is still in progress
